What Are Control Arms?

A control arm, also called an “A-link” is a suspension link that attaches the chassis of a vehicle to the front wheel. They are an essential part of the steering and suspension system of your Toyota truck or 4x4.

What Are The Different Types Of Control Arms?

A double-wishbone suspension system uses both upper and lower control arms. The upper control arm connects to the top suspension components of the steering knuckle, while the lower control arm is connected to the rearmost area of the knuckle. Both of these control arms are attached to the frame of the vehicle.

MacPherson strut-type suspensions use only a lower control arm, as the strut takes the place of the upper control arm.

Why Do You Need Control Arms?

Control arms are the primary link between your vehicle’s chassis and your front wheels. They hold your wheel in place and ensure the proper positioning and suspension of the wheel as you drive, and work with the steering rack and other suspension components to allow you to steer and maneuver your Toyota.

When Should You Replace Control Arms?

Control arms can usually last up to 100,000 miles, though they may wear out more quickly while off-roading. Hitting large potholes or other obstacles can bend or damage a control arm. If your control arms are damaged, it’s important to replace them as soon as possible.

What Are Rear Links?

Rear links are used to connect the rear suspension components to the chassis of your car, similarly to a control arm. Since they are not involved in steering, they are usually much simpler mechanically, compared to control arms.

Why Do You Need Rear Links?

Rear links help keep your car stable and allow for proper movement of the rear wheels while you’re driving off-road. In addition, aftermarket rear links are often required if you have lifted your Toyota truck or SUV, as this will help adjust the suspension geometry and provide a better off-roading experience.

When Should You Replace Rear Links?

Rear links can last quite a while – up to 10 years, in some cases. It’s difficult to tell if rear links are worn-out without a physical inspection. If the link itself looks damaged or the bushing is worn out, it may need to be replaced.
