What are Brake Lines and How Do They Work?

Your vehicle's functionality and performance hinges on the brake lines that enable your vehicle to transfer and convert the pedal's pressure into stopping power. Typically, cars utilize fluid to do this once your foot hits the brake, which we call a hydraulic brake system.

In the master cylinder, fluid is stored that transfers to brake calipers through your vehicle's brake lines when you apply pressure to the pedal. In turn, the brake calipers clamp down, which allows your car to slow down or stop.

Why Do Your Brake Lines Fail?

Brake lines can fail for various reasons, but the most common causes include the accumulation of damage or a crack that goes unnoticed, which can eventually lead to total brake line failure if the issues are not resolved preemptively. Another common reason for brake line failure is a worn-out bladder inside your vehicle's cap.

Additionally, brake line failure can occur when fluid levels drop too low. Modern vehicles are equipped with fluid level sensors that detect how much fluid is running through your brake system. If these sensors do not work correctly, it will not notify you when the fluid level falls to a level that's too low. That can be quite dangerous, as it may leave you with wheel lock or skidding tires while you're out driving.

When To Replace Brake Lines

If your brake lines are due for a replacement, you may notice fluid leakage, which is typically clear though it may be discolored if it is dirty or old. When you touch the fluid, you'll notice that it's similar to dry oil and that it might even smell similar to castor oil or even fish.

Another telltale sign of brake line vulnerabilities includes being able to push the brake pedal completely to the ground, without resistance. This is a serious problem that warrants a call to a towing company to take your vehicle for an inspection at a local shop. In other cases, your car's brake light may indicate that your lines need some attention.
